Pink red root chakra poster with white mandala symbol and text MULADHARA, ROOT CHAKRA, I AM.

Learning about chakras can seem daunting. I feel like there is a lot of misinformation around them, and it's hard to know where to even start learning. So, I thought I'd go through them all, starting with the Root Chakra. According to The Book of Chakras by Ambika Wauters, it rests in the perineum, at the base of the spine. It draws in energy from the magnetic field of the earth's core. There's a lot to cover with it, but I think I'll just do a general overview, also from The Book of Chakras.

Glandular Connection: Cortex of the adrenal gland (which secretes stress hormones)

This is important because when in danger, our body releases cortisol from the adrenal glands in a fight-or-flight response. I think this gives us the best understanding of the Root Chakra. It's about feeling safe, protected, and stable.

In fact, the positive archetype is the Mother. This is someone who is positive and nurturing. "Mothers encourage, acknowledge, and affirm our being through love, kindness, and absolute faith in the goodness of life. They make the dark moments bearable because they bring us hope of a positive outcome."

On the flip side, the negative archetype would be the Victim. "The victim is a person who, because of external circumstances, is unable to rally regenerative forces and go forward in life. Victims stay alive through the grace and generosity of other agencies and have little chance of renewing their connection with life as long as they remain dependent upon others to maintain life."

A few other key qualities and attributes associated with the Root Chakra:

  • Color: Red

  • Element: Earth

  • Essential Oils: Cinnamon, garlic, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, myrrh

  • Plants: Sage, or root plants like Ashwagandha, ginger, and turmeric

  • Metal: Lead

  • Earthly Location: Indian preserves and their sacred lands

  • Angelic Presence: Archangel Michael

  • Astrological Sign: Capricorn

  • Sensory experience: Smell

  • Crystals: Ruby, Bloodstone, Hematite, Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, and Obsidian

  • Spiritual Activities: Noticing the beauty of the physical world

  • Physical Activities: Yoga, and movement of any kind involving the legs and feet

There is so much more to the Root Chakra, but I figured this would be a good overview. As stated previously, this is all from The Book of Chakras. I highly recommend it; it's an excellent book that's incredibly informative. I've put a link to it if you're interested in getting it for yourself. It's part of an affliate program, but if you don't want to click the link, just Google the author and title and there should be other buying options!
