The Spiritual Meaning of Falling in Dreams

I think of all the types of dreams to have, falling is one of the most common. A good friend of mine recommended it as a topic, and I realized it was one I experienced as well. However, I was surprised to find that when I was doing research, there wasn’t a lot of guidance out there.
In one of my favorite resources, Dreams and What They Mean to You by Migene González-Wippler, she writes:
"To dream about falling indicates struggles that will accumulate to eventual victories. If you are injured in the fall, you will suffer losses and hardships."
To be honest, that still felt a bit vague to me. I knew there had to be a deeper explanation for the spiritual meaning of falling in our dreams.
To get clarity, I consulted one of my spirit guides. The first thing he immediately showed me was the ground crumbling beneath me—something that was once stable suddenly becoming uncertain and terrifying. It made me think of the phrase, "the ground is falling out from underneath my feet" (or slipping out from under you). According to Dictionary.com, this means experiencing a sudden, shocking loss of security, stability, or control. Then, he showed me the most important piece of the puzzle: the Root Chakra.
Located at the base of your spine, the Root Chakra radiates a vibrant red and represents the earth element. When it is balanced, you feel safe, grounded, and stable. The world feels familiar, predictable, and trustworthy. When it is unbalanced, It can literally feel like everything is falling apart.
In fact, "falling apart" is a common idiom meaning to collapse or break down—either physically, mentally, or emotionally. If you are having dreams about falling, it usually points to a lot of uncertainty happening in your life, specifically within your foundation. During these times, it is important to look at the thoughts you are holding onto in real life. In my absolute favorite resource, The Book of Chakras by Ambika Wauters, she writes:
"The negative attitudes associated with the Root Chakra have to do with despair and victimhood. These attitudes can generate violent and hateful feelings. These feelings emerge when our life is threatened and we feel overwhelmed. We may experience such thoughts as, 'It's not worth it'; 'I want to die'; 'Life is unbearable this way.' They all attest to a malignant dissociation from life and a lack of trust in its innate goodness."
If you want to bring stability back to your foundation—and ideally stop falling in dreams—here are a few practices that can help:
1. Grounding and Shielding Meditation: This does exactly what it sounds like—it keeps you protected and anchored to the earth. I will be posting a guided meditation for this soon, and I highly suggest practicing it every day if you can.
2. Go Outside (Earthing): This one is incredibly simple. Take off your shoes and plant your bare feet directly on the earth for a little while. Reconnecting with nature is a powerful way to let your Root Chakra know that there is stability in your life and that you are safe.
3. Root Chakra Affirmations: Speak words of stability into your life. These beautiful affirmations are also taken from The Book of Chakras:
I trust in the goodness of life to carry me through.
I belong wherever I am.
I choose life.
I affirm my right to the life I want.
I cultivate constancy, stability, and a wholesome structure to support me through life's changes.
I accept myself as I am. I am grateful for my experiences in life.
I hope this gives you some comfort and clarity! If you find yourself needing extra guidance, please feel free to reach out—I would be more than happy to help.
